If you are currently considering a change in your life, and are thinking of coming to teach English in Latin America, I recommend visiting Teachers Latin America for more information on becoming qualified and finding work. I myself took the TLA two week course in 2005, and remain in contact with the owner of the business. Which is as good a recommendation as any!
I also recommend visiting the ELT Mexico forum where you will find plenty of help and advice available from teachers and others who are already in Mexico City. They are always happy to try and answers any questions would be TEFLers have on finding work, renting apartments, cost of living and more. I should add that I don’t recommend Daves ESL Cafe.
Whilst it is the best known TEFL resource on the internet, and there are people who are willing to help, the owner of the site regularly accepts adverts from fraudulent schools and other scams, and the forums are very heavily censored if anything negative is posted about these advertisers. That’s pretty unfortunate, because a TEFL/ESL community should be able helping each other to not only find the best jobs, but to avoid rip off merchants.
If you are a native English speaking teacher already in Mexico City and are looking to pick up extra private classes, please feel free to send me an email with your details. I don’t always have classes available, but they do come along regularly. Let me know what area of the city you are in, and what sort of experience you have, and I will do my best to match you up with suitable jobs as they come along. Alternatively, just keep an eye on this blog – I will update it with available jobs as they become available.
